Is it alright to use contractions in a narrative essay?

I dunno, I thought since its basically a short story, that it was alright to use contractions like 'can't' and 'couldn't'... but when we had peer reviews in my AP English cl, my reviewers said to remove them all. o_O And I remember seeing a few in the example narratives we had to read... :)
