Question on Publishing Digitally?

I'm recently read an article on a man who wrote a novel that he was having some difficulty getting published. In the end he byped all the middleman nonsense and published himself by uploading his novel to be downloaded on digital reading devices such as Kindles and iPads. How would one go about doing this?
