How do I wire a new ground wire to a guitar with a tune-o-matic bridge?

I have a epiphone Les Paul and I disconnected the ground wire. I cannot take the stud out of the guitar. I found an area inside the guitar cavity that has some of the stud exposed. Can I just weld the wire to this stud.
