Why does John McCain have such a dim view of the American work ethic?

Lately, many Americans would be averse to such jobs. There isn't a lot of pay, the hours are long, the work is backbreaking. Unless you had a father like mine, who made me work in the rain and snow and expected it done without argument, such a work ethic is lacking in many Americans. I know I can't find it in most of the people I try to hire for the coffee shop I manage.
