How can you play online in counter strike 1.6?!?1?

hi guys, i just open up counter strike, go to a world, then when i tal kto people, they dont asnwer how can i play online with real players istead of bots, when i go to the game, i press h, and then add z bot, what do i do to play online? whats the server pword, or what do i do! dont just tell me what to do, tell me how, give step by step, please, if you just tell me what to do i wont know it, and if its not any of the ones i said, what is it? i have counter strike 1.6, but when i play, i dont play online, and i dont have a cd key, and i dont see anywhere asking me for a cd key. someone said i need to downlaod steam, they just say it, wtf how am i gonna know how to do that! again, tell me how to do it, do i have to downlaod steam, how do i download it, google or what, my windows is 2000, and an old computer, its pretty good for counter strike, please help me play online please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
